A load of Naclers are shouting "HYPOCRITE!" at a guy who cannot hear them. Sounds effective. May as well buy some season tickets and shout "The Jazz sucks!" and bring a couple of cowbells with you.

OK, so lets take a look at a dictionary and see what the word hypocrite means. So did Larry Miller say he loved this movie, and then pull the plug? No. Did he personally select the roster of movies being played? No, not likely. Did he recently attend a meeting of Utah Equality and tell them he was going to cater to their tastes in film? No. So how does him pulling this film make him a "hypocrite"?

Oh, it doesn't? It just makes him inconsistent. Got it. Because he allows other R films to be shown and not this one. But, the film wasn't pulled because it was rated R, it is pulled because of its controversial nature. So how does that make him inconsistent?

Oh, it doesn't? Well, then lets just yell about being pissed off at something because it looks like he is a HOMOPHOBE because he refuses to show an award winning film that shows manly men can be all jiggy wid it and then marry women and then get back together for a little hide tannin and its all good and society's fault these two manly men cannot just ride off into the sunset together to rustle some cattle and be happy in their manliness so they have to marry women in the mean time until they get old and realize they miss their old sweaty, dust covered horse-riding stinky man pals and get together for some "Hey, I sure missed you so I smelled your old clothes for the past 20 years" manly male lovin in a distinctly non-feminite way.

Did it ever occur to anyone this film is just left-wing pro-gay propaganda and Larry Miller doesn't want anything to do with it because its a firebrand in conservative-dominated Utah, and being a savvy businessman he doesn't want to have to deal with all the garbage because he has better things to do with his time? Should he stop showing rated R movies? I am sure he will, as soon as all of you Mormons there in Utah stop going and seeing them.

Thought you were a snarker, not a preacher. WTF?

Actually, that load of Naclers wasn't shouting at a specific individual, but rather the movie theatre managment. Unless of course that consitutes a specific individual.

Does the snarker not consider the content of Hostel to be of controversial nature? Whether it was pulled because of a rating or controversial content, the fact is that other movies currently playing in the same theatre have the same rating or also contain controversial content/messages.

And I have to agree with W. You appear to be losing your snark.

Cause I'm a snarker
I'm a preacher
I'm a lover
And I'm a sinner
I play my music in the sun
I'm a joker
I'm a smoker
I'm a midnight toker

Kim, Hostel isn't politically controversial in the manner this Gay Cowboy film is. You are comparing apples and oranges. As for losing my snark, you better watch it one-liner boy or I will open up a can of Snark on y'all.

Snarkernacle,

You forget that the reason the naccle exists is for people to whine about sex.

I happen to agree with the snarkernackle.

I have no plans on watching either film, not much into the Gay-love scene or the weird sex scene...

I have to admit that the hypocrisy charge does seem a bit more valid when you consider that Jordan Commons is showing Hostel which appears to be snuff film fetish and does also show fairly graphic homosexuality reportedly.

While from what I've read it's more the marketing that has played up the gore and violence factor with most fo it actually being done offscreen, it does sound far worse than anything in Brokeback Mountain.

Likewise, while I don't know, I wouldn't be surprised had Jordan Commons not also shown Saw and Saw II which is also quasi-pornography for violence and gore hounds.

Just to add, I'm not saying much about whether the act was good or not. Just that I think they'd have more of a moral ground if they also refused to show Saw and Hostel.

Clark, Saw and Hostel are not getting press based upon any kind of politics, and Brokeback Mountain is. That is all this boils down to: politics. Their rejection of the movie based upon this is only hypocritical if they had either explicitly or overtly embraced or championed a pro-gay position, which they didn't. They are a movie theatre in Utar that wants to avoid the political backlash of the community they seek to do business in. End of story.

Isn't it a comment on our mindsets when two dudes kissing is more controversial then sado-masochistic torture and murder? Maybe it's that the dudes are so hot too-maybe if they were old, flabby cowboys, people would find it less "edgey."

Response to Jodi Stoddard said... @ January 9, 2006 at 11:35 AM

Old, flabby cowboys kissing is so nawty hawt HOTT!

The whole thing is just silly. Everyone knows cowboys love sheep. DUH!

Anonymous said... @ January 9, 2006 at 11:47 AM

You'd give up sheep really fast once Heath flashes that smile at ya....

I don't kow about that. I doubt Gene Wilder would agree with you.

Snarker-- I think you're way off base here. I just don't see the big deal about a gay cowboy movie. I know which movie I'd pick if I had to choose between Hostel and Brokeback Mountain. I also know what movie I'd want my kids watching, and I can tell you, it's not Hostel.

Response to Jodi Stoddard said... @ January 9, 2006 at 4:51 PM

I'm way off base? Wait a minute, who's freakin blog is this? I have not weighed in on the whole Brokeback Mountain thing at all, or the Hostel thing either. I have not rendered an opinion on the cinematic value of either of these troughs of swill. I was snarking the conversation on Our Thoughts, and that is all. So, who is way off base, dear ol' Ned?

If people just see it as a business decision, great, it's not hypocritical. But I've heard other members treat this as some sort of moral victory and stand, and THAT'S hypocritical to look at it that way.

Our church leaders has likened homosexual activity to heterosexual activity that's outside of marriage-so if some Mormons try to characterize this is as a moral stand, then they totally look like hypocrites if the theater is playing Hostel and Grandma's Boy,etc.

I'm not making any comments on any of the movies in this thread, but I just want to say that "Utar" made me giggle. :)

Political backlash of a community? Are Utahns that sensitive to seeing Jake and Heath kissing? As oppossed to see chicks getting tied and sliced and diced? I don't think the business guy is a hypocrite, I think the "community" demographic that would do the backlashing are a bunch of hypocrites.
