File under: Judging

Not only is Caroline irritated that men spent half of the time talking at her RS Presidency meeting, she is aggravated that her Mercedes-driving, Armani-wearing, Great and Spacious Building-dwelling Stake President is counseling the women leaders to discourage girls from aspiring to lavish and inappropriate wedding gowns for Temple weddings that cannot be subsequently used after the Big Day.

Caroline pretty much agrees with his counsel, but that is besides the point, because this is an opportunity to detect masculine hypocrisy (the WORST form!) that simply cannot be passed over! I mean, if we are going to discuss cultural idolatry, then lets really start the fault finding. Never mind the Stake President did not counsel them to not spend a lot of money on the gown, only to keep it appropriate for the setting and useful for future Temple attendance. Oh, yeah, lets just skip that part and insinuate what he really meant, which was to keep girls oppressed in cheap hand-me-down rags so Priesthood Leaders can spend all of their money on themselves and their fancy cars and buy loads of meat, since we all know every self-respecting feminist has to be a vegetarian and must apologize at length for not being one and still advocate it, and watch Monday Night Football instead of having Family Home Evening like they tell all of us to do!

And did I mention I was surprised at how much men were speaking at this RS meeting? I mean, REALLY! They should just shut up and sit down, or better yet, don't even show up, since all they can do is spew their vile and pernicious hypocrisy! Oh, uh, I mean...he is a good guy...really...um...what do you all think?

What depressing thread that is. Starts off weak and fizzles from there, lot's of self-righteous indignation but not much substance. How dare he - HOW DARE HE! - express an opinion on what women wear to their temple weddings when he drives a mercedes!?! After all, feminists here in the OC (median home price, $600,000.00) have to keep up their pretenses.

The worst part about that post is that it gave Heather O. another chance to brag about her clavicles. Get a life and let that lame, lame, joke go. Oh the humanity!

Anon #2,

I agree that the clavicle joke need to be granted emeritus status, but it isn't the worst part of the post.

The worst part is that the post perpetuates and extends all the worst misconceptions and stereotypes about mormon feminism. You won't find anything else in the bloggernacle that is so full of smugness, self-satisfied conceit, petty whininess, overwrought emotionalism, or the inability to engage in a discussion of an issue. It sounds like a bunch of snotty beehives talking behind another girl's back about her clothes or hair.

It's discouraging, because that blog had a chance to be the gold standard. If an anti-mormon misogynist wanted to create a caricature of Mo Fems in an effort to discredit them, it would look a lot like Exponent II.

Anon#3-

That's a bit harsh. That post was set up in a way that the comments could only go one direction--slamming the stake president and allowing a free for all we love pretty dresses and evil male hypocrites have no business telling a bride how she should look on her wedding day thank you very much. But the rest of Exponent II isn't as pathetic as you make it sound. Cut them some slack for being new in the neighborhood and still trying to figure out what works and what doesn't. And how to structure a post that will generate the kind of comments you would like.

Of course, there are plenty of old timers in the Nacle that still haven't figured out what works and what doesn't....
