John Dehlin wants to know why LDS Family Services doesn't treat cases of "severe trauma" caused by LDS history and doctrine. Apparently people are bashing their brains out, self-immolating, being viciously assaulted by home teachers and missionaries, and generally experiencing a lot of excruciatingly painful injuries over Mountain Meadow Massacre, Blacks and the Priesthood, and Polygamy.

Last I heard lacerations, head wounds, arterial perforations, concussions, contusions and all other serious internal and external damage was best treated at your local Emergency Room. For all severe trauma you really should call the appropriate authorities, John, and not LDS Family Services. It is rather irresponsible of you to suggest the LDS community, even disaffected members thereof, call LDSFS instead of 911 when there are serious injuries to be dealt with.

My thoughts exactly--I wondered if some of these poor sad sacks from the DAMU have been on the receiving end of a Vic Mackey--the bald cop on The Shield-- home teaching visit.

You know, Bro Mackey picks up one of those giant quads and proceeds to beat them silly for daring to question anything the church says.

EEEk, the very thought of Vic Mackey as a HT causes my blood to clot. Though I'm sure he'd have intersting thoughts to share on, say, blood atonement and creative uses of tithing funds.

You have clearly not seen the rooms at LDSSF for victims of trauma. It's quite a sight. (I was there for a brief time trying to recover from the blacks and the priesthood issue, and have to thank the nurse who just walked the halls with me whispering, "It'll be all right. They've put a disclaimer in _Mormon Doctrine_. You'll get past this."
Others are in far worse shape. The burn units, as you might guess, are the worst. Victims of self-immolation (a few Cheney protesters and others reacting to the trailer for _September Dawn_, burning themselves in a surge of generational guilt) endure their baths. Enya plays constantly, and there's a lot of aroma therapy, mostly eucalyptus and jasmine.

I don't think you should be so hard on LDSSF without seeing the good they're actually doing.
